Around 300,000 people are expected to take part in a mass coronavirus testing study over 12 months, the government announced today.
Experts hailed 'one of the largest and most important studies into the Covid-19 virus' and said it would 'transform our understanding of the infection'.
The Department for Health and Social Care said around 20,000 households were currently being contacted as part of a 'first wave'.
The study aims to track the spread of the virus and the rate of infection in the general population. Crucially, it will include antibody testing to shed light on how many people are likely to have developed antibodies to the virus to ultimately help inform the development of new potential treatments.
