When two leading New York hospital networks announced that expectant mothers would have to deliver without their birthing partners, the reaction was swift.

On Monday,NewYork-Presbyterian and Mount Sinai Health System each released updated guidelines on their visitor policies as New York City geared up for what has become the most taxing week on the city's health care system since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

As of Friday, the United States has surpassed all other countries in the number ofCOVID-19 infections, with New York having the highest amount of cases among all states.

According to the new visitation rules outlined byNewYork-Presbyterian, no visitors — including birthing partners and support persons — are permitted for.
