He is an honorary director of PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.The “Real Time” host has been an outspoken animal rights advocate and defender of PETA for years.In a video PSA for the group, he admonished “hipster douches” for wearing Canada Goose. “New rule: No more douches,” he said in the clip. “I mean the hipster douches who piss away $1,000 on a Canada Goose parka and the hipsterazzi who max out their credit cards to look like them.”Maher continued: “See, what they don’t realize — or may not care about — is that Canada Goose trims its coats with the fur of coyotes who’ve been crushed and mangled in steel traps so painful and indiscriminate that they’ve been outlawed in over 85 countries.”And in a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter, he explained why he’s a PETA board member.“Being on PETA’s board is a perfect fit for me because PETA takes on the status quo and challenges conventional thinking,” Maher said.
