The operation led to the seizure of 2 Indian trawlers with 16 Indian nationals poaching in Sri Lankan waters northeast of Veththalakeni and off the Analativu Island.The Navy continues to conduct regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices of foreign fishing trawlers.As an extension of these operations, the Northern Naval Command deployed Fast Attack Craft of the 04th Fast Attack Flotilla to chase away a cluster of Indian poaching trawlers, having spotted they were engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters northeast of Veththalakeni and off the Analativu Island.

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Immigration and Emigration said that MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage was turned away from the Bandaranaike International Airport on Friday (10), as another persons' data was added to the system, instead of the MPs passport data.Harsha Ilukpitiya, Controller General of the Immigration and Emigration Department, stated that the travel ban list came into effect after the wrong data was added to the system.The officer who added the wrong data into the system has been suspended, pending inquiry.The Criminal Investigation Department and the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team are conducting further investigations into the matter.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Government hospital waiting rooms were empty on Monday (13) morning as patients were turned back due to a strike launched by the Government Medical Officers' Association against the government's new tax regime.Doctors across four provinces in Sri Lanka, namely the Western, Southern, Central, and Eastern provinces, went on strike with effect from 8 AM against the government's tax policy.The Professionals Trade Union Collective is spearheading the trade union action, and it is supported by at least forty Government and Semi-Government trade unions against the government's new tax regime, the bank interest rate hike, salary and wage anomalies, and several other demands.The Colombo National Hospital was the worst affected, as only emergency services were in operation while all other services were crippled by the strike.

Gotwals Elementary School on February 9.

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Hambantota High Court on Wednesday (15) sentenced four Police Officer to death over the murder of an individual back in 2005.The Crimes OIC of the Humangama Police, a Retired Police Constable, a Police Constable attached to the State Intelligence Service and currently at the Hambantota Harbor Police, and Former Police Constable attached to the Tissamaharama Police who was dishonorably discharged from service, were sentenced to deaht by the Hambantota High Court Judge Priyantha Liyanage.The accused had carried out a raid on the 29th of June 2005 to arrest a suspect responsible for three robberies in Matarawatte, Debarawewa in Tissamaharama.Initial police investigations revealed that the accused had surrounded the house of the suspect at midnight on that day, and following his arrest had instructed him to run off and then opened fire at him.The deceased was identified as Loku Hennadige Amila Mahesh, a resident of Matarawatte.This is incidentally the first time in Sri Lankan history that four police officers were sentenced to death at the same time.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police are asking for the public's help to identify two teenage suspects wanted in connection with a deadly shooting from January. Authorities say the shooting occurred on the 1400 block of Erie Avenue on January 11 at 5:30 p.m. Officers who responded on scene found 16-year-old Semaj Richardson unresponsive on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds to the chest, back and arm, police say. According to officials, the teen was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he later died. Police released surveillance video from the shooting in hopes someone will identify the suspects, who police say are in their teens. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESThe City of Philadelphia is offering a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. Anyone who sees the suspects is urged to contact 911 immediately.

NEW YORK - The man alleged to have been behind the wheel of a U-Haul truck that struck multiple people on and off the street in Brooklyn has been charged.Police say Weng Sor, 62, a man with a significant violent criminal history in Nevada, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder.Police said at a press conference on Tuesday that after interviews with his family members and interrogation, they believe Sor was suffering from a mental health crisis. The NYPD announced Wednesday that Weng Sor, 62, a man with a history of mental illness and violent criminal incidents, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder after going on a rampage in a U-Haul truck in Brooklyn, striking pedestrians and killing one man.According to NYPD officials, Sor, who lives with his mother in Las Vegas, traveled to West Palm Beach in Florida on February 1 to rent a U-Haul truck. On February 5th, while traveling through South Carolina, en route to New York, he was stopped for reckless driving and marijuana possession by highway patrol. On February 6, Sor arrived at his ex-wife and son's residence, and a few days later on February 8, had an altercation with his son.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead near Temple University's campus Monday night.Around 6:20 p.m., police responded to the 1200 block of West Venago Street for reports that someone had been shot.When officers arrived, they found a 23-year-old in the driver's seat of a crashed car who had been shot two times in the arm, two times in the chest, and one time in the back. Police say the victim was transported to Temple Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:36 p.m. No weapons were recovered, and no arrests were immediately reported, according to police. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police Department.

MANASQUAN, N.J. - Officials in New Jersey are investigating the death of another whale after they say one washed up on Manasquan's inlet beach on Monday. Police say they are unsure of what kind of whale it is, but they guess it's a calf, roughly 65 feet long. Authorities say they are pulling the whale out to more shallow water with hopes it doesn't get caught in the rocks. They say they do not have an exact time frame of when the whale will be removed, but it is expected that it will remain on the beach until Tuesday.The Marine Mammal Stranding Center, located in Brigantine, is volunteering with the investigation of the whale death, type, and cause of its arrival to shore. Police say they will not have any more information until the volunteers finish their investigation.

CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas - Authorities in Texas are working to identify the human remains discovered by a family’s dog.Luling Police said on Feb. 9, a resident on Hackberry Avenue notified officers after finding a human skull in their yard.The family said their pet dog had been bringing back bones for a week, but then brought a human skull from an unknown location.RELATED: Knot what you see every day: Remains of 1884 shipwreck discovered on Massachusetts beachThe family— originally thinking the bones were from an animal— had collected the remains and placed them in a plastic bag.Upon further investigation, officers discovered the dog was retrieving the bones from an abandoned structure near the family’s home.
