"Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.” For example, the CDC encourages everyone to clean surfaces using soap and water -- especially frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, toilets, countertops, sinks and more.
