Seven in ten cases of Covid-19 over the last two weeks were the result of close contact with a confirmed case. An interim analysis by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre of data from between 25 May and 7 June shows there was 5,618 cases during the period.
The HPSC said 70.1% were connected to close contacts with known confirmed cases, with just over a fifth due to community transmission, which means the source of the infection is unclear.
It said 3.3% of the cases over the two weeks related to travel, while 6.1% remain under investigation. The HPSC report shows that Limerick had the highest 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 people at 449, compared to a national average of 118.
