Narendra Damodardas Modi (born 17 September 1950) is an Indian politician serving as the 14th and current Prime Minister of India since 2014. He was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament for Varanasi. Modi is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation. He is the first prime minister outside of the Indian National Congress to win two consecutive terms with a full majority and the second to complete five years in office after Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Coronavirus cases in India jump to 5734 with 166 deaths. State-wise numbers here
With 540 new cases reported in past 24 hours, the total number of coronavirus cases in India has jumped to 5,734, showed latest figures from Union Health Ministry.
The death toll from Covid-19 rose to 166 while 472 patients have been cured of the virus or discharged. Maharashtra remains the worst affected state with 1,135 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu at 738 and Delhi at 669, Telangana at 427 and Rajasthan at 381.
To contain the spread of coronavirus, India is under a 21-day lockdown since March 25, with only essential services exempted.
