Rishi Sunak has announced an extension to the furlough scheme currently subsidising the wages of millions - but the the Chancellor is cutting the amount of cash workers will get from the government.
Some 7.5million people have had up to 80% of their salaries paid by the taxpayer under the furlough system at a cost of £8 billion.
Mr Sunak has previously said he was preparing to "wean" workers and businesses off the programme - which currently runs until the end of June..
But today he revealed his plans to continue the scheme until the end of October. He told MPs that the scheme would remain in its current form until the end of July - with the government covering 80% of the salaries of those furloughed.
