The coronavirus lockdown could be eased at different speeds in different parts of England, the UK government confirmed today.
The option is on the table after modelling suggested London has just 24 new cases a day - compared to 4,320 in the north east and Yorkshire.
The 'R' rate of transmission is also said to be just 0.4 in the capital, compared to 0.8 in the north east and Yorkshire. Downing Street did not rule out the possibility of primary schools reopening at a different pace for different regions of the country.
At the moment the plan is for all of England's Year R, 1 and 6 pupils to return from June 1 - but that has prompted anger from unions and crisis talks.
