Finance Minister Bill Morneau said on Friday that there was an incentive in the rental relief program announced earlier in the day, saying that the tenant would pay them 25 per cent of the rent but they would get a forgivable loan of 50 per cent of the remaining 75.

The hope, Morneau said, is it will give landlords confidence renters will remain in the building while still being able to get income through the COVID-19 outbreak..

Finance Minister Bill Morneau elaborated further regarding the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance Program, which will offer qualifying commercial property owners forgivable loans covering 50 per cent of impacted tenants rent, in exchange for providing at least 75 per cent in rent reduction and a moratorium on evictions. He said tenants who pay less than $50,000 in rent and have experienced at least a 70 per cent reduction in revenues will qualify.
