There have been a further 407 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in Ireland, the Department of Health said this afternoon. It also confirmed that there are 34 patients in intensive care, the same figure as yesterday.

The case figures may change due to future data review, validation and update, the department said. In its latest letter to the government, the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) said there is increased confidence the planned easing of restrictions for June remains low to medium risk.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said that vaccination was proceeding at or ahead of schedule, with a high uptake. Separately, the vaccine registration portal opened for people aged 40-44, with 44-year-olds eligible to register from
