Covid restrictions could be to blame for rise in deliberate fires across East Kilbride

There were 41 deliberate primary fires in East Kilbride and Avondale in 2020-21, up by 50 per cent.Secondary fires – such as bin and grass fires – are classed as less serious and are generally as a result of anti-social behaviour.

There were 145 deliberate secondary fires in 2020-21 - up 32 per cent.Mr Lennox said: "There has been a notable increase in deliberate primary fires during the year with vehicle fires being a major factor."With numbers unusually high, the fire service was quick to react to early indications of a potential trend."There was a spate of vehicle fires in this area during the winter time.
