US President Donald Trump has admitted more US citizens will die as it gets set to end the lockdown – but he defiantly added “we have to get our country open”.
The US has a far larger reported coronavirus death toll than any other country in the world. One and a quarter million Americans are confirmed to have been infected with Covid-19, with numbers still climbing sharply.
Currently, 72,275 have died, with a further 16,179 patients in a critical condition. Deaths per million of population statistic – a key measure of how well a country is handling the pandemic – is 218.
