The mayor of a small town in Peru lay in an open coffin and pretended to be dead when he was caught breaking lockdown rules.

Jaime Rolando Urbina Torres, mayor of Tantara, had allegedly been out drinking with friends, in violation of the country's coronavirus social distancing laws.

When police officers arrived to arrest the group, quick-thinking Torres jumped into an open casket and lay still, pretending to be dead in an effort to avoid arrest.

He was photographed lying with his eyes closed, still wearing a face mask. The ruse did not work and the mayor, who was found to be intoxicated at the time, was detained on charges of violating curfew and social distancing laws.
