Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will take part in a video conference with other EU leaders later this afternoon amid persistent differences of opinion over the scale and nature of Europe's overall recovery package.
Mr Varadkar will join a number of countries calling for some kind of mutual sharing of debt in response to the economic impact of the pandemic, but countries such as the Netherlands, Germany and Austria remain firmly opposed to so-called coronabonds.
This will be the fourth video conference in response to the coronavirus emergency. In a letter to EU leaders ahead of the call, European Council President Charles Michel urged leaders to show more determination in overcoming differences.
