Councils will be 'encouraged' by the Government to widen pavements, create pop-up cycle lanes and close some roads in cities, the new Covid-19 recovery strategy reveals.

Extra funding will be made available to town halls across Greater Manchester and the country. And the 'road map' document said new statutory guidance would also be given to all local authorities to boost walking and cycling.

A section of Deansgate in Manchester city centre is already set to be temporarily closed to traffic once restrictions on movement to limit the spread of Covid-19 begin to ease.
