The Australian Government will gradually ease restrictions on elective surgery from Tuesday 28 April 2020. The Australian Government, states and territories, in close consultation with peak surgical bodies and the AMA, will ease restrictions on some types of elective surgery from Tuesday 28 April.

Elective surgery will be reintroduced in a staged and controlled manner, which balances patient needs and the ongoing need for capacity to treat COVID-19 patients.

The Government acknowledges the burden that has been placed on patients whose elective surgery has been deferred because of COVID-19.

Certain categories of surgery and other services such as IVF will be available, while maintaining the safety of both patients and health care workers.
