Greater Manchester coronavirus death toll rises by more than 50 in a day

Another 52 people have lost their lives to coronavirus in Greater Manchester's hospitals. NHS England data released today shows that the death toll had risen by 52, bringing the overall total in our region to 644.

The recorded deaths are those of patients who died in hospital after testing positive for the virus. Of the 52 deaths announced today, 9 of the patients died yesterday.

The data is likely to include some cases from the Easter Bank Holiday weekend which have only now been confirmed, The total number of deaths caused by coronavirus is likely to be much higher.

Deaths in the community, including care homes, are not recorded in these figures and are published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) several days later.
