How coronavirus might change how our offices look when we return to work after lockdown

The traditional office could look very different once the coronavirus pandemic is over and we return to work. Increased awareness about hygiene may result in a total re-design of the modern work space, experts say.

The open-plan office began to replace traditional cubicles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, after films like Office Space made rows of cubicles seem unfashionable and unappealing.

The new design was quickly adopted by many businesses who thought that having no physical barriers between workers would encourage collaboration and teamwork, as well as being more spatially economic.

However it also means colleagues are far more exposed to one another, and shared work spaces and hot desks can result in germs spreading easily.
