Inside the Napier barracks, an Iranian man seeking asylum in Britain is coughing into his mobile phone. “I have tested positive for Covid,” he tells me, coughing repeatedly throughout our conversation. “For a few days, I was very sick, shivering and in pain.

Now I just cough and cough. There is no doctor here and I have had no medical help, not even paracetamol.” The disused army barracks, in Folkestone, Kent, is supposed to be providing emergency accommodation for asylum seekers – and is not a detention centre.

Yet people are kept behind barbed wire and shocking scenes were shared on social media this week of a resident trying to leave by throwing himself at the fence.
