London Tube and bus fares will see biggest rise in years as part of £1.6bn bailout

All London transport fares will rise above inflation from January in exchange for a £1.6bn coronavirus bailout. There will also be a temporary halt to free travel for children.

Free travel during peak hours for over-60s and the disabled will also temporarily stop. Fares on buses - scrapped to help protect drivers from Covid-19 - will be reintroduced.

And the congestion charge for people driving into the centre of the city will resume. The rise on Tube, bus and other travel - of RPI inflation plus 1% - will finally end mayor Sadiq Khan's freeze on single fares in the capital.

The policy had turned into a political row in recent years - with Tories accusing the Labour mayor of being irresponsible by not putting up prices.
