Nearly 1,500 rogue drivers were caught speeding on Greater Manchester's near deserted roads in just seven days during the coronavirus lockdown, with one topping 129mph.

Traffic cameras clocked 1,409 motorists breaking speed limits on the region's roads and motorways during the first seven days of April.

They have taken advantage of largely clear carriageways as the vast majority of people abide by the national coronavirus lockdown announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on March 23.

One driver topped 129mph between junctions 19 and 20 on the M62 near Heywood. The motorist was among 34 drivers caught speeding on 70mph limit sections of Greater Manchester's motorway network.
