A coronavirus vaccine "largely protects" monkeys form the potentially life-threatening infection, according to a Chinese biotech firm who conducted an animal trial.

As countries race to find a vaccine for Covid-19 in a bid to stop the devastating effects of the deadly bug, a pharmaceutical giant has made a promising discovery.

Sinovac Biotech conducted a trial consisting of eight monkeys injecting them with two different vaccines. Three weeks later they were exposed to the virus, and did not develop infections.

Channel News Asia reports all of the monkeys were "were largely protected against SARS-CoV-2 infection," according to the firm's findings.
