Niall McGinn still shudders at the memory of a ghost-like closed doors match in Belgrade with Northern Ireland. But the Aberdeen ace accepts playing in empty stadiums could be a necessary compromise to bring football back out of cold storage.

McGinn was in the Irish squad for the Euro 2012 qualifying defeat to Serbia nine years ago - a match that went ahead in front of just a couple of hundred travelling fans after the home support were banned for disorder in a match against Italy.

The 32-year-old admits it’s far from ideal. But with the coronavirus crisis lockdown still in place and no sign of a return to action, McGinn admits it could be the best way to plan for a restart.
