Nicola Sturgeon announces seven coronavirus deaths in Scotland as 1,297 new cases recorded

The First Minister announced the latest figures during her daily Covid-19 briefing in Edinburgh. The rising figures come as new information emerges on the state of the UK's finances due to the pandemic.

Taxes will have to rise by more than £40 billion a year just to prevent  Government borrowing  spiralling out of control, a leading economic think tank has warned.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said borrowing this year was already set to hit levels not seen outside the two world wars due to the coronavirus pandemic.
