The number of people with Covid-19 in hospital has risen to 1,042, up from 957 yesterday. It is the highest number since 12 January, when there were 1,055 patients with the disease in hospital.

However, around half of the hospital cases are described as "incidental", which means patients happen to have tested positive on admission but are in hospital for something else.

The number of patients with Covid-19 in intensive care units remains relatively low at 41. Latest coronavirus stories Covid-19 cases are no longer updated at the weekend.

On Friday, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre was notified of 9,186 new PCR-confirmed cases of the disease. It also reported that a further 6,752 people had registered a positive antigen test through the HSE portal.
