China: Beijing warns of ‘explosive’ Covid outbreak, Shanghai conducts mass testing
Covid curbs in Beijing since Thursday, with at least two districts closing some entertainment venues after a flare-up in a neighbourhood full of nightlife, shopping and embassies. While China's infection rate is low by global standards, it maintains a zero-Covid policy, citing the need to protect the elderly and the medical system, even as other countries try to live with the virus. So far, the country of 1.4 billion has seen just 5,226 deaths from Covid-19.

Gas prices hit $5 nationwide for first time in over 2 decades
national average retail price for regular gasoline hit $5 per gallon on Saturday for the first time in over two decades, according to data from AAA.It's the highest the group has seen gas prices rise since it started tracking the data in 2000, and it's likely to get worse as oil demand continues to outpace global oil supply, driving barrel prices even higher, AAA spokesperson Devin Gladden said.As of Saturday, prices at the pump are63 cents higher than they were a month ago and nearly $2 morethan a year ago, according to AAA data. GAS PRICES CLIMB 5 CENTS OVERNIGHT, AMERICANS ARE PAYING NEARLY $2 MORE FROM JUST ONE YEAR AGOGladden noted that oil prices reached $120 per barrel this week, which was also seen Russia first invaded Ukraine.

How much will home prices drop as interest rates rise? Depends where you live
interest rates rise and the post-pandemic market starts to materialize. But just how low prices will go depends on what part of the country you’re living in, with a recent report from Desjardins Economic Studies suggesting cities that saw the most growth in the pandemic now have the furthest to fall.Major Canadian housing markets including Toronto and Vancouver saw less sales activity and even price drops in April and May as the Bank of Canada began raising interest rates over the past three months. Bidding war no more — How to make an offer in Canada’s cooling housing market This “chillier wind,” as RBC economist Robert Hogue dubbed it in a report last week, is expected to continue driving home values down from their pandemic-era highs as demand softens and housing inventories are given time to rebuild.Randall Bartlett, senior director of Canadian Economics at Desjardins, tells Global News that rising interest rates are the “pin that’s bursting the housing bubble that developed during the pandemic.”The Desjardins report released this past week predicts that from the peak of national home prices in February of this year to the end of 2023, the average sale price in Canada will drop 15 per cent.Virtually all markets are expected to see some drops, but some could see value erode more rapidly. In the Maritimes, for example, prices in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are expected to fall 20 per cent over that timeframe.

Ottawa dropping random COVID-19 testing at Canadian airports for vaccinated travellers
COVID-19 testing of incoming international passengers at Canadian airports.Random testing at airports will be temporarily suspended at all airports starting on Saturday, June 11 until June 30, according to a joint statement from Transport Minister Omar Alghabra, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino and Tourism Minister Randy Boissonnault.Unvaccinated travellers will still be required to be tested on-site.The government is also announcing that, as of July 1, all testing, including for unvaccinated travellers, will be performed off-site.The news comes after federal public health officials said Friday they were looking at updating their advice to government on the random testing reuquirement.Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam says the testing is not done to monitor travelers for infection, but rather as a way to measure emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 that may be making their way into Canada from other countries.“The random testing is not to detect every case.

Ukraine: 100-200 soldiers die daily, new plea for more arms
Relatives say goodbye to the dead Ukrainian soldier in Poltava, Ukraine, on June 10, 2022. (Photo by Pavlo Pakhomenko/NurPhoto via Getty Images) KYIV, Ukraine - Up to 200 Ukrainian soldiers are being killed every day in Russia’s military onslaught, according to an adviser to Ukraine’s president — and only more and more advanced Western weaponry will turn back the Russian offensive, reduce the casualties and force Moscow to the negotiating table.Mykhailo Podolyak told the BBC in an interview aired Thursday that the daily loss of between 100 and 200 Ukrainian soldiers is the result of a "complete lack of parity" between Ukraine and Russia, which has "thrown pretty much everything non-nuclear at the front" in its bid to advance in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region and beyond.Recently Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy put the daily death toll at up to 100, but Podolyak said it had grown.

Biden to speak at Port of Los Angeles as high inflation persists as threat
LOS ANGELES - The Port of Los Angeles is a testament to President Joe Biden’s unrewarded efforts to address what he calls his top economic priority: inflation.Biden will speak at the port, America's busiest, on Friday with inflation persisting as a problem that has eluded his policy tweaks, deals brokered with the private sector, infrastructure spending and regulatory actions. The port moved to round-the-clock operations last October under an agreement that the White House helped to shepherd. The goal was to remove backlogs of ships waiting to dock and containers waiting to flow into the country, a logjam that was pumping up prices as the world began to recover from the coronavirus pandemic. The port is now moving out a record 200,000 containers on a rolling 30-day average.

Covid-19: Diabetes and long Covid symptoms: Here's what the latest study says
Diabetes and long Covid: Interestingly, according to three studies, diabetes patients were up to four times more likely to develop long Covid compared to people without diabetes, as per a presentation conducted on Sunday at the annual Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association. Additionally, the researchers noted that diabetes appears to be "a potent risk factor" for long Covid but their findings are preliminary because the studies used different methods, definitions of long Covid, and follow-up times, and some looked at hospitalized patients while others focused on people with milder cases of Covid-19. However, it is worth noting that the researchers have said that more high-quality studies across multiple populations and settings are needed to determine if diabetes is indeed a risk factor" for long Covid.

Covid origin mystery: WHO probe stalled, experts ‘allergic’ to lab theory
WHO expert panel released a report suggesting that it is impossible to determine the cause of COVID-19 because of lack of data. Experts agree, some scientists might be allergic to the idea of investigating the lab leak theory Another blow to two-year-long efforts to understand how Covid-19 began. Latest investigation into its origins by the World Health Organization have been inconclusive, largely because data from China is missing.
