Poignant images have appeared that are reminiscent of Partition pictures “Hunger will kill us before the virus gets to us." This is the refrain of migrant labourers either on a long walk, or in a crush of people at a bus terminal, to reach what they seem to assume would be the safety of their homes in the countryside.

It’s an exodus of daily-wage earners from big cities, set off largely by survival anxiety in the wake of India’s 21-day Covid-19 lockdown.
