A team of award-winning Scots health staff who created, then introduced, a new method of delivering faster medication to Parkinson’s patients have been hailed by their peers and by the Scottish Parliament. The health professionals, based at NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Biggart Hospital, Prestwick, created a ‘flashing tulip system’, which alerts nursing staff to administer Parkinson’s patients with the correct dose of medication while they are in hospital. The team previously won an Advanced Project award from The Neurology Academy in 2023 - thanks to their ground-breaking research and delivery of the scheme. Now they’ve been recognised in the Parkinson’s Excellence Network Awards, where they won awards for ‘Innovation in Practice’ and ‘Excellence.’The team’s excellence award was an extra boost, as their project was the overall winner from all the other categories up for prizes, making it a glorious double. In fact, Scots health staff led the way at the awards ceremony in Birmingham, with four out of six prizes going north of the border. So it’s another feather in the cap of the Ayrshire team who include Nick Bryden, Parkinson’s nurse specialist, Richard Cottrell, digital pharmacist and Michelle McLuckie, senior pharmacist. Now their pioneering and potentially life-saving medication delivery scheme will be rolled out to other NHS health boards in 2024, helping thousands of Parkinson’s patients. The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now.Get all the local news in your area – plus features, football news and the latest on the coronavirus crisis – at your fingertips 24/7.The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories while you can customise your page with the sections that matter to you.The Ayrshire
