Lung cancer is one of the biggest killers in the UK and the disease has certain symptoms that can be tough to spot.It is one of the deadliest types of the disease, accounting for around a quarter of Scottish cancer deaths in 2021, according to Government data.

As with any cancer, early detection for lung cancer is crucial for survival, so it's important to be aware of the warning signs. One particular symptom can be tougher to spot at this time of year, as Brits across the country vow to shed some pounds to kick off a healthy new year.

According to the NHS, unexplained weight loss can be a red flag for lung cancer, even for those who aren't on any diets.Even if you're not following a strict plan, eating less than usual in January is common, following the over indulgence that occurs over the Christmas period.Around 60 per cent of people with lung cancer say they had a loss of appetite and significant weight loss at the time of their diagnosis, the Mirror reports.

The medical term for this is 'cachexia' and is the result of the body not being able to absorb all of the fat, protein, and carbs from the food you eat.Experts at the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation recommend anyone concerned about this symptom should weigh themselves once a week at the same time of day - making sure they're wearing the same clothes or "similar weighted clothing"."If you don’t have any scales, you can keep an eye on how your clothes are fitting you," they added. "If your clothes are becoming looser, or if your watch or rings don’t fit as well, then you should contact your doctor."Smoking is a huge risk factor and the most common cause of lung cancer - but also people who have never even touched a cigarette can be diagnosed.
