Rishi Runak confirms 140,000 firms have applied for furlough scheme

More than 140,000 firms have applied to the Government's furlough scheme since it opened on Monday, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said.

The grants will cover the wages of more than one million people who may have otherwise lost their jobs due to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The businesses that applied should receive cash in six working days. Mr Sunak made the announcement during the daily coronavirus press conference on Monday.
