The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the central government and Assam government on a plea seeking the release of people who have spent more than two years at detention centre in the state.
The petition has been filed by Raju Bala Das who is himself a detainee and has been living in the detention centre for past two years.
He seeks the release on the ground that the detention centres are overcrowded and there is high threat of infection amidst the rising cases of Covid-19.
The petition was heard by apex court bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde. The case proceedings took place through video conferencing and the case will be next heard on 13 April.
