Over 80 students have benefited from a “bizarre” Edinburgh University bursary scheme that helps people with two surnames.Around £25,000 has been paid out from a fund that rewards those called Gillies or Carmichael.The awards are part of a bequest left to the University forty five years ago, but the institution does not hold any founding documents or a constitution.However, a minute of a University Court meeting in December 1974 contains details of the qualifying rules.A bursary will first be awarded to students bearing the surname Carmichael, failing which Gillies becomes next in line for the money.If there are no students with either of these names, the help goes to individuals who came from Bell Baxter School in Cupar.If nobody meets this
