England and Wales have recorded the second-highest weekly number of deaths featuring coronavirus recorded during the pandemic.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released the latest figures today. The data showed 8,433 deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned in the registration in the week ending January 29 - eleven higher than the previous week.
Nearly half (45.7%) of all deaths registered in England and Wales in that week mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate - the highest proportion recorded during the pandemic.
Nearly 2,000 people died in care homes in cases involving coronavirus in the past week, according to the ONS figures. A total 1,971 died in care homes, and 123 in hospices.
