Six Greater Manchester MPs scoop top Labour positions as Keir Starmer unveils new frontbench

A clutch of Greater Manchester MPs have scooped senior positions in Labour’s new shadow cabinet following the results of the party leadership contest this weekend.

Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long Bailey, who came second to Keir Starmer in the race to be leader, becomes shadow education secretary.

Previously she had been shadow business secretary under Jeremy Corbyn, where she had been in charge of drawing up the party’s green industrial strategy.

Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds moves from the shadow Treasury team to become shadow work and pensions secretary. On Twitter, Mr Reynolds said he was ‘incredibly proud and humbled’ to take up the role, adding that he knew ‘just how big a brief this is to both individuals and the UK
