Colombo (News 1st) – The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the Nidahas Janatha Sabhawa, Uththara Lanka Sabhagaya, 12 parties and 62 groups came together on Wednesday (11) to form a new alliance to contest the upcoming local government election.
The new alliance has been named the Nidahas Janatha Sandhanaya or Freedom Peoples' Alliance. They will contest under symbol of the Helicopter.
The new alliance includes more than 36 MPs from various parties. "We picked the name Nidahas Janatha Sandhanaya mainly because many issues have arisen with regard to freedom and democracy," stated former President and SLFP Chairman Maithripala Sirisena.
He explained that the "sanctum of democracy needs to be preserved" if all of these issues are to be resolved. "If we are to overcome this crisis, the international community needs to witness the freedom of democracy bestowed upon the people," he added."The main objective of this new alliance is to put a fullstop to the corrupt and deceitful politics of this country," said leader of the Nidahas Janatha Sabhawa MP Dullas Alahapperuma. "There are many points of error within this family political system," he said adding that the "first step is to admit the errors." The former Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna stalwart went on to note, "We admit our errors with humility and invite all the citizens of this country to come join hands with this respectable alliance." .
