Supermarket shoppers queue around car parks to load up before Easter Sunday shut down

The coronavirus lockdown has caused huge queues outside many major supermarkets, snaking out into car parks and even out onto nearby streets in some cases.

The supermarkets are always busy on Bank Holiday weekends. But social distancing means that queues are longer – both because fewer people are allowed in stores at any one time, and because the queues are more spread out.

There are longer queues than usual at checkouts as people need to ensure they keep at least 2 metres away from each other. In many cases there are fewer checkouts open too.

People posting on social media about the epic queues are mostly saying that they are good-natured, typically British affairs.
