LOS ANGELES - The world may be facing shortages of most products due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a war in Europe, but there’s one commodity that is overflowing: Maple syrup. The world’s largest supplier of maple syrup recorded a record harvest of the sweet gooey goodness thanks to promising weather conditions, Quebec syrup producers reported. 211.3 million pounds of syrup was harvested this spring in the French-speaking Canadian province, according to the region’s agri-food consultant Groupe Ageco.This years harvest tops a previous record set in 2020 of 175 million pounds. "We benefited from excellent weather conditions this spring," Luc Goulet, president of the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, said Friday in the statement.FILE - Woman puts maple syrup on her pancakes.

PHILADELPHIA - An afternoon shooting in Philadelphia claimed the life of a teenage boy and injured a teenage girl, according to police. Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to the 800 block of Bridge Street around 4 p.m. for reports of a shooting. Police found a 14-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wound to the chest.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Southwest Airlines cannot be sued over the death of a passenger whose medical distress was mistaken for unruly behavior by a flight crew out of Oakland, a California appeals court ruled this week. The decision on Wednesday, reported by the Bay Area News Group, upheld an Alameda County trial court’s decision over what happened to Newport Beach resident Rich Ilczyszyn, 46 – a financial trader and CNBC contributor. He ended up suffering a deadly pulmonary embolism while on a flight from Oakland to Orange County on Sept. 19, 2014 – but the flight crew thought he was just being disruptive because of his odd behavior on the plane. His family had filed a wrongful-death suit against Southwest and the flight crew, saying Ilczyszyn died because the crew failed to give him any help. The trial jury returned a verdict that Southwest was negligent but that the negligence was not a substantial factor in Ilczyszyn’s death. That verdict was then appealed.In his family's original wrongful death suit against the airline, his lawyer, Daniel Balaban asked jurors to award Ilczyszyn's family a total of $63 million in damages.According to court records, flight attendants did not realize that Ilczyszyn needed any medical help – all they heard was him "grunting, growling [and] crying" and not complying with their requests to open the door. Southwest attorney Andrew Ryan argued that the crew deemed him a security threat.They called sheriff's deputies to meet them when they landed.

WASHINGTON - The costs of gas, food and other necessities jumped in May, raising inflation to a new four-decade high and giving American households no respite from rising costs.Consumer prices surged 8.6% last month from 12 months earlier, faster than April’s year-over-year surge of 8.3%, the Labor Department said Friday.On a month-to-month basis, prices jumped 1% from April to May, a steep rise from the 0.3% increase from March to April. SKYFOX over storm damage in Blackwood, New Jersey as the NWS investigates the possibility of a tornado hitting the area during morning storms.  BLACKWOOD, N.J. - Officials have confirmed that an tornado touched down in Gloucester Township, New Jersey early Thursday morning as a line of powerful storms swept through the area. A National Weather Service (NWS) survey team was dispatched to the Blackwood section of the township to survey damage left behind in the storm. Thursday afternoon, NWS officials confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down around 5 a.m. with estimated peak winds of up to 90 miles per hour. The strong winds damaged some homes in the area, including one that was struck by a falling tree.

SKYFOX over a home in Northampton where authorities are investigating after two adults were found dead.  NORTHAMPTON, Pa. - Police have launched a death investigation in Northampton after one person was found dead and another injured on Wednesday. According to authorities, police responded to a home in the area around 5 p.m. for a report of a man who was possibly displaying suicidal behaviors. Police say officers entered the home and found an adult woman dead and an adult man with injuries to the head. Officials did not specify the type of head wound or how it was caused.
