Unions warn schools must not be forced into 'inoperable' Covid testing plan

Plans to recruit volunteers to test millions of secondary pupils for Covid-19 in January have been branded “inoperable”. Unions lambasted the Government’s “chaotic and rushed” announcement for mass testing next term and said schools should not be forced to implement the plans.

In a joint statement, the NAHT, the Association of School and College Leaders, the National Education Union, the NASUWT, the Association of Colleges, the National Governance Association and The Church of England Education Office, said: “It is our view that due to the chaotic and rushed nature of this announcement, the lack of proper guidance, and an absence of appropriate support, the Government’s plan in its current form will be inoperable for most schools and
