The US death toll from coronavirus has topped 500,000 as the grim milestone of half a million has been reached, according to data.
It's just over a year after the country detected its first cases of the virus and it now has 500,071 deaths, research from Johns Hopkins University shows.
President Joe Biden called on Americans to observe a moment of silence on Monday to commemorate the grim milestone. More than 28,168,735 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the US.
They are the worst death toll and number of infection in the world. "I ask all Americans to join us as we remember the more than 500,000 of our fellow Americans lost to Covid-19 and to observe a moment of silence at sunset," Biden said in a proclamation.
