This Friday marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day, the date on which the Second World War came to an end in Europe. Under ordinary circumstances people would be celebrating with street parties, parades and special events to mark the historic occasion.
But the coronavirus lockdown and the social distancing measures it involves means these have had to be scrapped in line with the ‘stay home, save lives’ message.
Town halls across Greater Manchester have been forced to cancel their celebrations - including Wigan which had planned a three-day event which would have been biggest in the north west.
