The New Reality: Say goodbye to the office you knew
COVID-19.After a cluster of 97 cases appeared in a South Korean office building, public health officials realized just how easily the virus could spread in the workplace.Researchers discovered that 94 cases were on the same floor, and 79 of those who fell ill sat in the same section of the office. All told, 44 per cent of the people working on that floor became sick.Buildings will have to consider a multi-layered strategy to protect people inside, beginning with indoor heating and cooling systems.“We have to employ some of these healthy building strategies,” explains Joseph Allen, an assistant professor at Harvard’s T.H.

Racialized groups in Canada will ‘lose’ in the post-pandemic economy. Experts aren’t surprised
coronavirus pandemic descended on Canada in March, hundreds of companies shuttered, thousands of people lost their jobs and the nation’s gross domestic product fell 8.2 per cent in the first quarter — the worst quarterly showing since 2009.The virus also laid bare stark inequities in health care for marginalized and racialized communities, proving that some people are harder hit by the virus and its economic impact. Earlier this month, Global News reported a strong association between high rates of COVID-19 and low income, visible minority status and low levels of education in cities like Toronto.

Why has B.C. handled the pandemic better than other provinces?
coronavirus was announced in late January. Since then, the province has had around 2,800 cases of the disease. But B.C.’s infection rate, at 55 per 100,000 people, pales in comparison to Ontario, which has had 226 cases per 100,000, or Quebec’s which sits at 641.So what’s led to B.C.’s relative success so far during the pandemic? Experts say it’s likely due to a few things.Something as simple as the timing of March Break may also have had something to do with how many cases a province saw, said David Buckeridge, a professor at the McGill University School of Population and Global Health.
