There has been a 22% increase in helpline calls to the Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI) during the Covid-19 pandemic, the organisation has said.
Volunteers and staff at RCNI, which represents seven Rape Crisis Centres around Ireland, also reported an increase in time spent on helpline calls during this period.
On RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Dr Clíona Saidléar, Director of the Regional Rape Crisis Centres said that for many people the trauma they have suffered was heightened due to the pandemic, and while a lot of new people contacted the service, others who had finished treatment returned seeking further support.
She said that it will take time to measure whether or not there was more or less sexual violence as a result of the pandemic
