Children are being selected at random to have swab tests for Covid-19 at home. Parents have this week been sent letters telling them which children have been selected for the 'testing research study'.

Once parents register, they will be sent a test to be administered at home. This involves a swab of the nose and throat, which will then be returned to a lab by a courier so that it can be analysed.

The study is being conducted by Imperial College London and research company Ipsos MORI on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care.

The letter to parents reads: "The study will help the government develop its approach to Covid-19 testing. We have chosen your child at random, and participation is completely voluntary. "The test may show
