The coronavirus death toll in Wuhan, China - the epicentre of the global pandemic - is more than a thousand people higher than previously reported.

Wuhan’s prevention and control agency has changed the death toll from 2,579 to 3,869, an increase of over 50 per cent. The increased figure factors in patients who were unable to reach hospitals, as well as instances of late and mistaken reporting, the agency has stated.

In a statement confirming the correction, the taskforce said: "Life comes first, people come first. Every life lost in the epidemic is a family sorrow, and it is also the pain of the city's heart.
