Coronavirus deaths in hospitals up by 638 in last 24 hours

The number of people who have died in UK hospitals after contracting coronavirus is now 18,738. The death toll has increased by 638 from 18,100 at the same point yesterday, according to the latest update from the Department of Health.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has risen by 4,583 to 138,078 from 133,495 at the same point yesterday. A total of 425,821 people have now been tested, with 23,560 tests concluding yesterday.

Downing Street says testing capacity is now at over 40,000, but the government has been criticised for only testing around half that number of people per day.
