Desperate families on benefits are cutting back on their kids’ nappies and depriving themselves of food as they are hurled into debt during the pandemic.
Boris Johnson faces mounting calls not to slash Universal Credit by £20 a week after a poll claimed 60% of families on benefits borrowed money in the last two months.
A survey of 3,100 parents on Universal Credit or Child Tax Credit today finds 30% borrowed from friends and family, 28% on credit cards, 16% on an overdraft and 13% used payday loans.
The survey for Save the Children by pollsters Opinium, between 17 and 30 September 2020, also found 28% have cut back on children’s items like clothes, toys and nappies.
