The coronavirus reproduction ('R') rate in Germany has shot up to 2.88 today after it was 1.79 yesterday and 1.06 on Friday.

It means infections are above the level needed to contain the virus in the long term, according to figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for public health.

This R rate means that, out of 100 people who contract coronavirus, a further 288 people will also be infected with the disease.

An R rate of below one is necessary to be able to gradually contain the virus. RKI's data reflects infection rates one to two weeks ago.
