The government is ‘opening the door’ for the return of professional football in England in June. But Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy chief medical officer for England, said it will have to be a ‘slow and measured’ approach.
Speaking at the government’s daily press briefing - hosted by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps - Prof Van-Tam said that experts will first see how socially-distanced training goes before competitive football matches are allowed to return.
He revealed plans are being made now to make this a reality, and that once training is resumed, social distancing measures will still have to be adhered to.
