ERNAKULAM: The Kerala high court on Thursday stayed for three weeks a controversial move by the state government to give alcohol to addicts with withdrawal symptoms based on special permission from doctors.
A division bench of Justices AK Jayasankaran Nambiar and Shaji P Chaly heard the matter via video-conferencing. The plea, challenging the state government's move, was filed by Congress lawmaker TN Prathapan, legal website Bar and Bench reported.
The state government's move had come under fire from major outfits representing Kerala Government Medical Officers Association or KGMOA, National Mental Health Wing and the Kerala unit of Indian Medical Association, who cited it as unethical and illegal.
